Raising Your Dog Gluten Free?

If your dog has been diagnosed with Celiac Disease then they need to be on a gluten free diet, but perhaps if your dog has some other health problems he or she may also benefit from this diet.

My 13 year old American Cocker Spaniel, Mutsy, started having skin problems a little over a year ago. Her skin would itch so badly that she would chew and scratch herself until she bled. She visited many veterinarians and tried many different treatments to cure this problem, but nothing worked.

I decided to start her on a complete allergy free diet, eliminating everything from gluten to chicken. Within 2 weeks, she stopped itching completely! Her skin is healing now and the fur she lost over the spots she gnawed away at is starting to grow back!

Recently, a new gluten free dog food was brought onto the market. It is produced by the All American Pet Company and is called, Grrr-nola Natural Dog Food. In addition to being gluten free it is supplemented with vitamins and omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.

For more information on this particular product, visit: aapbrands.com

Also, talk to your vet about other limited ingredient diet options for your dog.

Quick Bites!

If you're on vacation in Los Angeles and only have a little time between sightseeing adventures and want to grab a bite to eat, there are many gluten free options.

Although, I have spoken about the following chains in previous posts I thought it would be appropriate to mention them again here as they all originated in California.

In-N-Out Burger was founded in 1948 by Harry Snyder and his wife Esther and is headquartered in Irvine, California. They have locations throughout the Western United States with many of them in the Los Angeles area. Their delicious fresh made french fries are gluten free and if you are feeling in the mood for a burger you can order it "protein style" - meaning it will be wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun.

For more information, visit www.in-n-out.com.

A great place for a cold drink on a hot day is Jamba Juice. Jamba Juice was founded in 1990 and has many locations in the Los Angeles area. All of their smoothies with the exception of Pomegranate Heart Happy are gluten free. All of their boosts and super boosts with the exception of Daily Vitamin, Energy, and Heart Happy are gluten free too!

Find out more at www.jambajuice.com.

Pinkberry is another great place to try especially on a warm day. It is an upscale frozen dessert restaurant headquartered in Los Angeles, California. The first store was opened in January 2005 by Korean Americans, Shelly Hwang and Young Lee. It is often referred to as "crackberry" for its cult-like following. All of their yogurt is gluten free!

The current flavor selection includes:

*Original
*Green Tea
*Pomegranate

*Coffee

*Coconut
*Passion Fruit
*Tropical Swirl

Fruit toppings include: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, bananas, kiwi, mango, and pineapple. Seasonal fruit toppings include pomegranate seeds, lychee, valencia oranges, and bing cherries.

For more information, visit www.pinkberry.com.

Take Me To The Polo Lounge

My favorite place to stay in Los Angeles, California is at The Beverly Hills Hotel with their world-famous restaurant, The Polo Lounge.

The Polo Lounge is open from 7 AM - 1:30 AM and serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night suppers. They also have both outdoor and indoor seating. If you dine during lunch and dinner in the summer you will get to enjoy a piano accompaniment alternating with light jazz on the patio. During Sunday Brunch, jazz music is also featured.

Their menus have an extensive range of options for those on a gluten free diet including fresh squeezed juices, smoothies, fruits, berries, eggs, omelettes, fish, caviar, soup, salads, risotto, meats, poultry, etc. They have such a range of fresh ingredients and are more than willing to create any dish you could imagine.

It's even better to know that they are very aware of Celiac Disease and the dangers of cross-contamination. They also told me the last time I stayed there that if I were to let them know in advance about my gluten free diet they would get the proper ingredients to prepare gluten free breads, waffles, and pancakes for me! So, keep that in mind when booking a reservation!

My Favorite Restaurant!

The one place I dine at every single time I visit Los Angeles is the restaurant Locanda Veneta. It is one of my all time favorite restaurants! Its aim is to transport you to the cuisine of Venice, Italy.

Although Locanda Veneta does not have an exclusive gluten free menu, they are very familiar with gluten intolerance and can prepare excellent gluten free meals. Some of my favorites include:

Starbucks Discontinues Gluten Free Pastry!!!

As many of you already know, Starbucks has discontinued their Gluten Free Orange Valencia Cake after introducing it only a little over 2 months ago.

The only official comment to come from Starbucks explaining the reasoning behind this heartbreaking decision to the gluten free community is that "it was too much of a treat, and not a nutritious snack. The Kind Snack Bar is replacing it."

First of all, I want to state that I love Kind Snack Bars but it in no way can replace a gluten free pastry. Besides, Kind Snack Bars are available everywhere from Duane Reade to Whole Foods and are often found already in most Celiacs' purses or pockets. We are not going to be excited to walk into a Starbucks and grab a fruit and nut bar while everyone else with us is getting a tasty cookie, brownie, cake, etc.

In my opinion, Starbucks went wrong with introducing the Orange Valencia Cake as their first gluten free pastry. I feel they should have introduced a more mainstream flavor like a chocolate-based product such as a cookie or brownie or even a delicious banana nut bread or coffee cake. Also, one of these other products may have had more of a chance of appealing to Starbucks customers that are not on a gluten free diet. In fact, a great product for Starbucks to bring back would be the Gluten Free Aztec Ancho Chile Brownie they introduced in April 2007 that was virtually impossible to distinguish from a brownie containing gluten.

The discontinuation of the Gluten Free Orange Valencia Cake is definitely a crush to those living with Celiac Disease. However, we must not sit back and accept what has happened. Instead, we need to let Starbucks know that we want gluten free products! I encourage everyone to write to (web form @ www.starbucks.com) or call Starbucks (1-800-235-2883) and let them know your dissatisfaction with them discontinuing their Gluten Free Orange Valencia Cake.

Triumph Dining
has started an online petition to bring back the Gluten Free Orange Valencia Cake and you can sign it by visiting them here:

Triumph Dining Petition

Also, Starbucks has a website, MyStarbucksIdea, in which you can voice your opinions. Then other customers can vote up your idea. Ideas with the most amount of votes will get reviewed by Starbucks and may be put into effect. This was how Starbucks came about offering a gluten free pastry to begin with.

So, please go to the website and vote-up all of the ideas to bring gluten free options back to Starbucks and when you're there why not write your own comments too?

Alright, time to get to work!

Betty Crocker Gluten Free Dessert Mixes - The Review Is In

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to receive a Betty Crocker "Sweet Moments" package from MyBlogSpark. In addition to some other goodies, this package contained all 4 gluten free dessert mixes from Betty Crocker. This included:

*Gluten Free Yellow Cake Mix
*Gluten Free Devil's Food Cake Mix
*Gluten Free Brownie Mix

*Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix

I have finally been able to bake and sample each of these tasty treats! The first item I chose to bake, were chocolate cupcakes with vanilla frosting from the Devil's Food Cake Mix. These cupcakes were moist and delicious and tasted just like the real thing!

Next I made some Chocolate Chip Cookies, which I ended up over-cooking slightly. However, they were still crunchy with a nice amount of chocolate chips scattered throughout.

Then I decided to make the Brownies. These were chocolate-y and chewy and a very yummy treat!
And last night, I baked vanilla cupcakes with chocolate frosting using the Yellow Cake Mix. These cupcakes turned out just as well as the first batch of cupcakes. It is practically impossible to distinguish them from a real cupcake!

If you have not yet had the chance to try these excellent gluten free dessert mixes from Betty Crocker (that are very easy to make!), I suggest you rush to your local mainstream supermarket to see if they have started carrying them. Throughout the summer, they will be making their way into stores throughout the United States.

As a lucky treat for ALL of my readers in the United States, you can call 1-800-446-1898 to request a FREE coupon for one of Betty Crocker's New Gluten Free Mixes and to receive information about all of General Mills gluten free products!

Stay tuned as information regarding our BETTY CROCKER CONTEST will be posted later this morning!

Sticks and Twigs

A few months ago, I mentioned a brand called Mary's Gone Crackers. They produce a line of gluten free crackers along with a tasty gluten free snack known as Sticks & Twigs.

At that point, I had tried their crackers that are made with organic brown rice, organic quinoa, organic flax seeds, and organic sesame seeds many times. I had never tried the Sticks & Twigs.

Well, when I was at the Fancy Food Show in NYC I was able to grab a free sample of the sea salt flavor. Then, I was lucky enough to receive a box of samples from Mary's Gone Crackers with a bag of their Chipotle Tomato Sticks & Twigs too.

Sticks & Twigs
look exactly like that but they make for a great, healthy, crunchy snack! For example, last night I brought a bag with me to Central Park to watch the Philharmonic and they were the perfect addition to our tasty assortment of snacks.

For more information, please visit www.marysgonecrackers.com

Mozzarelli's has been featured in the past on my site but I felt I had to discuss it again as every time I visit their restaurant I find more delicious gluten free products!

First of all, Mozzarelli's makes a terrific gluten free pizza crust using their own blend of brown rice and beans. You can order a classic cheese slice, a slice with a variety of toppings or an entire pie. It is one of the few places where you can order gluten free pizza by the slice!

Udi's Gluten Free Food

Another line of delicious products that I was able to sample at the Fancy Food Show were by Udi's Gluten Free Foods. The company was founded 15 years ago by Israeli native Udi Bar-on. They recently started to produce gluten free, dairy free, soy free, and nut free products in a dedicated gluten free bakery. I sampled the Whole Grain Bread which was amazing! In addition to the Whole Grain Bread they also make:

*Lemon Streusel Muffins
*Blueberry Muffins

*White Sandwich Bread

*Pizza Crusts

Udi's Gluten Free Foods are currently available in Colorado, Texas, Minnesota, Utah, Kansas, and New Mexico at grocery chains such as Whole Foods, King Soopers, Vitamin Cottage, Kowalski's Markets, Lund's & Byerly's, United Supermarkets, and Central Market.

We're Back!!!

Hey Everyone!

It's been a long time but rest assured Ms. Celiac Says... is back in action! We have a ton of
great posts ahead of us as I was lucky enough to attend the Fancy Food Show in NYC on June 28th as a member of the media.

At the show, I was able to sample a variety of gluten free products that are on the market and a few that have yet to be released! I absolutely cannot wait for some of these products to be released and I'm sure once I tell you about them you will not be able to wait to try them either!

This afternoon, I was able to do some baking. About a week ago, I tried out Betty Crocker's Gluten Free Devils Food Cake Mix when I made some chocolate cupcakes with vanilla frosting that were absolutely delicious!

Today, I made Betty Crocker's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies. These were also very easy to make and just required the addition of 1 stick of butter, 1 egg, and 1 tsp vanilla to the mix. I think I may have slightly overcooked the cookies (as you can see from the photograph), however, they still turned out well, albeit a bit crunchy!

I hope everyone had a great 4th of July weekend and make sure you stay tuned to Ms. Celiac Says...for the latest and greatest gluten free news!!!
