Kasha, Kasha, Kasha!

One of my favorite breakfast foods is to have either kasha or cream of buckwheat by Pocono from Birkett Mills.

In addition to being gluten free and 100% pure buckwheat it is also high in protein, low in fat and sodium, and has no cholesterol plus it is certified USDA organic!

And I love topping it off with some fresh berries or pomegranate seeds!

You can find Pocono Kasha and Cream of Buckwheat at leading health food stores, supermarkets, and many other retailers.

Here's A Wonderfully Useful iPhone Application!

Last month, Zeer, the creators of the new iPhone application glutenScan gave me an online tour of their latest product. I was very impressed but wasn't able to discuss it with all of you until it was approved and available for purchase. Now that time has come and I am very excited to share information about this latest iPhone application with you!

glutenScan allows consumers to find gluten free groceries while out and about. It allows you select a product while shopping and search for it on your iPhone app by product name, category, or UPC. In addition to
providing information on the gluten free status of a product it also will give you the date that the information was confirmed and the ability to call the product manufacturer at the touch of a button.

Currently, glutenScan has over 30,000 products and more than 10,000 manufacturers in its database and 500 products are added or updated each week.

And if the product you are looking for is not gluten free or not available at the store, it will provide you with a list of gluten free alternatives!

glutenScan by Zeer is available to purchase at the iPhone App store (www.itunes.com/appstore) via a subscription basis. The initial download is $1.99 for 30 days or you can sign up for 90 days at $3.99.

The Fifth Season

Last week, I dined at a restaurant called the Fifth Season in Port Jefferson on Long Island. I had been meaning to visit since I heard they marked menu items "gf" for gluten free!

For one on a gluten free diet, there are quite a few options at the Fifth Season. I enjoyed the "Housemade Cavatelli" dish without the housemade berkshire pork sausage (although that is gluten free).

My gluten free pasta dish (photographed on the right) included spinach, garlic, crushed red pepper, pecorino roman cheese, and white wine pan sauce with gluten free brown rice pasta. It was delicious! The gluten free pasta is by Trader Joe's.

Other gluten free dishes include:

*Seasonal Vegetarian Soup
*Maine Lobster Bisque
*Maine Lobster Cocktail

*Organic Field Greens

*Grilled Point Judith Calamari

*Chopped Seafood Cobb Salad

*Frittata with Housemade Berkshire Pork Sausage, Pecorino Romano Cheese & Heirloom Tomato

*Housemade Cavatelli with Housemade Berkshire Pork Sausage, Spinach, Garlic, Crushed Red Pepper, Pecorino Roman Cheese, White Wine Pan Sauce with Gluten Free Brown Rice Pasta

*Housemade Sweet Corn Ravioli with Ragout of Long Island Corn, Braised Leeks and Tomatoes and Micro Basil with Gluten Free Brown Rice Pasta

*Roasted Organic Frenched Chicken Breast

*Steak Frites

*Oven Roasted Filet Mignon

*Sorbet

*Gelato

The restaurant is located at 34 East Broadway in Port Jefferson, New York. It is open for Brunch and Dinner on the weekends and for Lunch and Dinner during the week.
